Bastione Santa Maria in Monopoli, Bari, Italy… with its two cannons still perched atop the structure looking out over the Adriatic Sea. This ancient defense tower used to provide protection from raiding ships as well as merchants coming in and out of the port of Monopoli. It also provided heavy artillery for the Castle of Charles V which was built in 1525. Monopoli seems like a perfect name for a city that has so much history…
